Cvent vs Eventbrite: one shines with its enterprise features, the other shines with its marketing features. But for small teams, we have a far better match!

Cvent and Eventbrite are popular event planning and management platforms. During our tests, we found that they both offer valuable event management features, but cater to very different audiences.

Cvent is for large organizations and seasoned event organizers looking for a complete solution to manage activities across the event lifecycle, from venue and speaker management to attendee engagement and analytics. However, it has a very high learning curve, limited marketing features, and hidden pricing models geared toward enterprises.

Meanwhile, Eventbrite is the complete opposite — its pricing makes it affordable for organizers and attendees. It actually beats Cvent at mass marketing with advanced email targeting and social media advertising. The downside is that it owns your attendee data. Also, its lack of attendee engagement features and sub-par event management, branding, and analytics tools make it unsuitable for mid-market use cases like live or virtual summits and conferences. 

As you can see, both are excellent platforms with some limitations. Which is why I’ve included Eventzilla in this comparison. Its intuitive and easy-to-use platform simplifies your event planning and management workflows, making it ideal for small and medium-sized businesses that want easy onboarding and professional customization options. Moreover, Eventzilla also offers a dedicated attendee engagement tool accessible on desktop and mobile. 

Since they’re all complex platforms, I’ve broken down the comparison between Cvent vs Eventbrite vs Eventzilla into the following categories:

What is Cvent?

In 1999, Reggie Aggarwal founded Cvent as an all-in-one event management solution to replace the millions of yellow post-its and spreadsheets.

Cvent offers tools an event organizer needs to plan, manage, and evaluate any event. You can streamline planning logistics using the Supplier Network, track earnings and expenses in the Budget Management software, and evaluate speaker requests using the Speaker Resource CenterTM. On event day, you have individual apps to easily coordinate event day activities like attendee check-in, lead collection, and attendee engagement. You can also easily measure your event’s success using the engagement scoring system. However, the solutions aren’t designed for organizing medium-sized events. And, setting up and mastering these tools can take time if it is your first event. 

Cvent’s feature-rich solution is great for large corporations and seasoned event organizers looking for a comprehensive event management solution to support them throughout the event lifecycle.

What is Eventbrite?
“The Live Experience Expert” 🎶🏟️

Kevin and Julia Hartz founded Eventbrite in 2006 with their co-founder and CTO Renaud Visage as a platform to not just browse but also create and promote live experiences around the world. 

Eventbrite has a very straightforward and streamlined event creation process that lets you create and publish your event. Its marketing features easily drive registrations to your event by sending targeted ads and emails to other Eventbrite users. It also offers basic analytics features to understand your registered attendee’s behavior. However, it doesn’t offer any event day features except its check-in application and its customer support isn’t the best in the industry. 

Eventbrite is designed for organizers looking for a simple event planning and marketing platform that can drive registrations for in-person live events like concerts, conferences, marathons, etc. 

What is Eventzilla?
“The Godzilla of Event Management” 🦕💪

In 2009, Asir Paulraj and Muthukumar Rambacthavachalam started Eventzilla with the mission to make the event planning and management process easier.

From ticketing to surveys, Eventzilla offers the complete toolset to plan and manage your event on one platform. It offers a drag-and-drop site builder to create custom event pages, registration forms, and websites that align with your brand. When it comes to marketing features, Eventzilla supports discount codes, free tickets, and personalized email campaigns to help you drive registrations. It also offers a separate app called Event Hub to deliver an interactive attendee experience with custom event agendas, polls, Q&As, and 1:1 appointment scheduling. With Evenzilla’s analytics feature, you can track how well all these tools are performing by creating custom reports for in-depth insights into every event activity. 

Eventzilla is perfect for small and mid-sized businesses and non-profits in any niche looking to organize in-person or hybrid events with robust attendee engagement features.

Note: A lot goes into event planning and execution, that’s why we divided this topic into four sub-sections (click on the link to jump to them):

A) Workflow: Cvent has complex event planning workflows, Eventbrite streamlines the workflow for uniformity, while Eventzilla condenses the event planning process onto a single platform.

Cvent provides specific apps to address individual event planning scenarios. The platform can be divided based on two use cases: event planning & stakeholder coordination.

Cvent has apps to increase the efficiency of your event planning activities:

  • Cvent Supplier Network to find and book your next venue easily with search filters, RFP templates, and reports to help you in your search.
  • Speaker Resource CenterTM to streamline communications with speakers and manage their content.
  • Exhibitor Management to manage all exhibitor-related tasks like booth staff registration, session sponsorships, appointment scheduling, etc. 
  • Registration Websites to create intuitive landing pages that showcase your event and encourage registrations (shown in the screenshot below).

Cvent also offers apps to coordinate between various event stakeholders (vendors, managers, exhibitors, speakers, etc.):

  • Meeting Request Forms to create branded forms using a drag-and-drop editor to collect event information on speakers, venues, vendors, etc. 
  • Cvent Budget Management to populate all your spending and budget data on its reporting dashboard to make tracking, analyzing, and managing transactions easier.
  • Access Portal to streamline the workflow of event stakeholders by organizing planning tools in one branded portal (shown below).

However, setting up each tool and getting every stakeholder involved in the process is cumbersome. So, only go with Cvent if your company has a dedicated team organizing events regularly. If you don’t fall into that group, Eventbrite or Eventzilla are better options. 

Eventzilla offers very similar tools to Cvent but simplifies the workflows on its all-in-one platform. You can get your event going in just a few hours instead of weeks with tools to:

  • Quickly create event registration websites to market your event using the drag-and-drop website builder.
  • Set up branded registration forms with automated waitlists, approvals, and multiple flows based on attendee type.
  • Create detailed event agendas with rich speaker profiles, session information, and registration options.
  • Receive and review speaker requests easily on a dedicated abstract management software.

It also has an AI-powered content generator to assist you in quickly creating engaging event descriptions. All you have to do is answer a few prompts and Eventzilla will generate a description for you within a few seconds.

On the other hand, Eventbrite has a very straightforward and streamlined event creation process but offers only basic customization options. You can only customize the event description, ticketing options, and payment methods, and can’t customize the event page except the cover image. 

B) Payment processing: All three have payment processing platforms but charge different processing fees.

Cvent Payment Services lets you effortlessly manage your event finances by automating payment processing, payouts, and tax collection. You can offer three different payment plans: 

  • Full payment where you pay the entire amount upfront.
  • Partial payments where you complete your payment over time.
  • Pay at the event where attendees can block tickets and complete the payment at the event via the OnArrival app.

Payments can be made in 130+ currencies using all major credit cards including Visa and MasterCard. Also, apart from Cvent’s 3.99% processing fees, you can also add special fees for specific sessions, services, or attendees. However, you’ll only receive the payout 30 days after your event.

Eventbrite offers a PCI-compliant payments solution called Event Payment Systems, where attendees can pay online (credit or debit cards) or offline (cash or cheques).

You’ll receive the money in your account three days after your event or receive advanced payouts on a case-by-case basis. However, ticket processing fees are high at 3.7% + $1.79 for tickets and 2.9% for other orders.

Eventzilla offers six different payment methods, including the in-house Eventzilla Payments (WePay) tool for simplifying payment processing for attendees and organizers.

Although it doesn’t offer multiple payment plans for attendees to choose from, its ticketing fees of $0.99 + 2.4-2.9% per ticket ensure you can charge a reasonable ticket price for your event. But most importantly, you can choose your payout schedule either daily, weekly, or monthly. 

C) Attendee check-in: Cvent offers valuable on-site check-in & lead collection features, Eventzilla offers basic check-in and tracking features, while Eventbrite supports only attendee check-in capabilities.

Like its event planning collection, Cvent offers a wide selection of event management apps for organizers and exhibitors.

  1. OnArrival is Cvent’s check-in application for organizers to capture attendance, monitor session capacity, and track event booth engagement. 
  2. LeadCapture lets exhibitors capture attendee information with a quick scan of their business card or name badge. 
  3. Attendee tracking & reporting to track and understand your attendee journey from registration to post-event follow-up.

Cvent’s approach with separate applications to manage registrations, check-ins, event floor logistics, etc. makes sense for larger events with dedicated event planning teams. 

However, a decentralized system isn’t ideal for smaller or mid-market events. It’s also worth noting that scanning is only available with the OnArrival Premium which comes at an additional cost.

Eventzilla makes it easier to coordinate on-site activities by providing all its event management features on one platform. It has a mobile app to validate attendee tickets manually or by scanning a QR code. 

You can link to any printer to print badges and tickets during check-in. It is also possible to track attendee engagement during the event on the platform, but more on that in the analytics section.

Meanwhile, Eventbrite keeps things very simple by allowing organizers to check in attendees using the Eventbrite Organizer app. You can also print attendee tickets from the application directly. These are very basic features when you compare them to advanced event management platforms like Eventzilla and Cvent.

D) Attendee engagement: Eventbrite doesn’t offer any attendee engagement features, while Eventzilla and Cvent have dedicated attendee engagement platforms.

Eventbrite falls short when it comes to attendee engagement features, offering only basic options like email and push notifications. It encourages organizers to organize attendee engagement activities themselves, which makes sense when you consider Eventbrite mainly focuses on marketing concerts and festivals.

Cvent lets attendees control their event experience from the Attendee Hub — a centralized app offering a custom interactive experience during your in-person, virtual, or hybrid event. You can customize the Attendee Hub homepage with dynamic elements to display the latest information about sessions and speakers. 

Attendees can use the app on their laptop or mobile device to:

  • Schedule 1:1 meetings with speakers, exhibitors, and other attendees (1)
  • Engage in live chats, Q&As, polls, quizzes, and surveys (2)
  • Watch live broadcasts and recordings of virtual events (3)
  • Virtually visit exhibitor and sponsor booths

Eventzilla’s attendee engagement features are very similar to Cvent. You can offer attendees access to a separate engagement portal called Event Hub with event layout plans, agendas, and speakers. They can also attend sessions and participate in polls while using the application.

Event Hub lets you engage with your audience from around the world with features like:

  • Main Stage to live stream keynotes, speaker sessions, and important webinars
  • Breakout Sessions for smaller, focused group meetings and discussions
  • Q&A for online event attendees to interact with speakers and presenters
  • Private messaging for attendees to send messages directly to speakers and presenters
  • Networking for private in-person meetings and 1:1 sessions (coming soon)

Winner: Eventzilla simplifies the event planning and management process by providing all the necessary features in an easy-to-use, intuitive platform. Cvent focuses on driving registrations via email marketing, while Eventzilla also lets you add widgets to encourage registrations from your website and social media pages.

Cvent has a drag-and-drop site builder that lets you create a branded event website, complete with a registration page to showcase your event information. You can also offer discounts on your site to encourage registrations.

Once your website is ready, you can use the email marketing feature to send personalized emails to your email list. You can either choose from the available email templates or build them from scratch. Since you own attendee data, your attendees won’t receive any spam emails after your event.

Eventzilla also lets you create event pages to promote your event. It offers a simple drag-and-drop website builder to create responsive event pages with options to customize the theme to align with your brand identity. 

Apart from this, Eventzilla also offers widgets that you can embed on your website and Facebook page. You can use widgets to convert your existing website into an event site with registration pages, ticketing links, event calendars, and session & speaker profiles. Based on my tests, this feature made it easier to create an event site that matches a brand quickly and efficiently.

You can also launch personalized email campaigns to promote your event using Eventzilla’s email marketing tool. Similar to Cvent, you can choose from templates or create your own email to send to your contact list. However, you can only send invites to 1000 contacts for free.

Eventbrite has comprehensive event marketing features that send targeted ads and emails to customers in its network.

Eventbrite integrates event pages, email marketing, social media ads, and search ads in an all-in-one marketing platform called Eventbrite Boost. You can use Eventbrite Boost to:

  • Send personalized emails to up to 10,000 contacts with automation 
  • Launch Facebook and Instagram ad campaigns directly from Eventbrite 
  • Promote your entire event calendar with automated multi-event ads
  • Run Eventbrite Ad campaigns to promote your event among Eventbrite app users

Eventbrite Boost maximizes your registrations by running marketing campaigns using the data of millions of former event attendees. However, this also means Eventbrite owns your attendee data and attendees will receive emails from them recommending other nearby events.

Winner: Eventbrite runs event promotion with highly-targeted email and social media marketing campaigns directly on its dashboard. You can also run ad campaigns on the Eventbrite app to maximize event registrations.

Cvent’s event reporting suite gives you an in-depth overview of your attendee’s experience before, during, and after the event. You can choose from existing report templates and create your own reports to:

  • Analyze your account activity, from custom field changes to user login history
  • Track speaker requests and approvals 
  • Measure attendee engagement and appointments at the event
  • View survey responses and summaries

It uses a proprietary system called Engagement Score to rank attendee experiences across all checkpoints, including registration, check-in, appointment scheduling, and sessions. You can set custom points for each checkpoint or let Cvent’s machine algorithm set scores based on data from previous events. 

Eventbrite offers basic event performance data.

Eventbrite continues its trend of keeping things simple by offering basic event performance data on its dashboard. You can view event data like:

  • Ticket sales across one or more events,
  • Number of registered attendees,
  • Number of page views from desktop and mobile,
  • Track your traffic source (Google Search, Eventbrite app, etc.).

You may find some discrepancies in the number of page views since it doesn’t include registrations completed through the embedded checkout. Also, you don’t have any feature to track attendee engagement during the event. 

Eventzilla offers personalized insights into event performance with custom reports.

Eventzilla lets you download reports around standard metrics:

  • Order reports to view order status, ticket types sold, payment options, registrations, etc. 
  • Attendee reports to track check-ins, booth visits, appointments, etc.
  • Survey reports to track responses to custom questions in forms and surveys.

You can create custom reports to track event-specific data points for one or more events. You can also sync this data with your CRM and marketing platforms with a single click to derive more in-depth insights and simplify your workflow.

Winner: Cvent. It offers an impressive array of report templates covering every stage of the event lifecycle, from registrations to post-event surveys. It also helps you understand your attendee experience using its proprietary engagement scoring system.

Eventbrite offers only email support for its organizers and attendees. But customers have complained of very slow response times to queries so it’s probably a good idea to look for alternatives. It also has a Help Center with answers to common queries, but it isn’t as detailed as Eventzilla or Cvent.

Cvent’s customer support availability depends on the tool in question.

Cvent offers you three basic customer support options:

  • Community forum and help center (1) to find answers to common questions and discuss with other Cvent users.
  • Call support (2) for immediate answers to more complex issues.
  • Support Query Form (3) to open a customer support case. A customer support executive usually responds within 24 hours.

It is worth noting though that the availability of customer support executives varies depending on the tool. For example, the event diagramming solution customer support is only available on weekdays while vital tools like Attendee Hub have 24/7 customer support.

Eventzilla offers customer support via email, chat, and phone.

Eventzilla offers multiple customer support channels to ensure your queries are answered around the clock. Customer support executives are available 24/7 via chat, email, or phone (From 7 AM to 11 PM US time for US customers and for worldwide customers after that).

You can also search the Help Centre for answers to common questions. If you’re using the Annual Pricing plan, you’ll be assigned a dedicated account manager who can answer any support queries. 

Winner: Eventzilla offers 24/7 customer support via email, chat, and phone. You can also find answers in the Help Centre or, if you’re on the Annual Pricing plan, you can reach out to your dedicated account manager.

Cvent offers customized pricing structures depending on your event requirements. There are a few estimates available online but your best bet is to reach out to their sales team for an accurate quote or by creating a dummy event the free version of the Cvent Event Management platform. 

From our experience, we know that Cvent follows a pay-as-you-go model where you pay only as attendees register for your event. The free version does let you use the platform with the pay-as-you-go model but there are some limitations. For example, you only get access to the free version of the mobile app. 

Eventbrite’s pricing is flexible based on the number of tickets sold.

Eventbrite offers all its ticketing and marketing tools for free for up to 25 tickets — making it perfect for small or one-time event organizers. After that, it charges a fee depending on how many events you’re organizing + ticketing fees:

The Flex plan uses what I like to call a ‘pay-as-you-plan’ model where you only pay per event. Its pricing starts at $9.99 per event for up to 100 tickets. It is ideal for companies that only organize a few events yearly.

The Pro plan follows a subscription-based model starting at $29 per month for up to 100 tickets. It is perfect for online conferences and other live virtual events where you’ll need to drive registrations with mass email campaigns. You also get a 14-day free trial to test out its features. 

Finally, the Premium plan is perfect for event aficionados who regularly organize live experiences like conventions, concerts, and so on. You get access to custom ticketing fees, personalized onboarding, and 1:1 consultations with an event expert. 

Something worth noting: the prices mentioned above don’t include additional expenses like ad spend, processing fees, and ticketing fees (3.75%+$1.79 per ticket in the US). You can offset the ticketing fees by including them in your ticket price but the fee differs according to location. It’s a good idea to review ticketing fees for each country before signing up to ensure ticket prices are affordable for your target audience. 

Eventzilla offers the most flexible pricing plans and payment models.

Eventzilla pricing is structured in a way that lets you pay per registration using one of two pricing models:

The Basic plan lets you create unlimited events and market them on your website but you only get access to basic registration forms and 100 email invites. It is ideal for smaller events with limited attendees like online webinars. 

The Pro plan offers everything in the Basic plan plus access to event agendas and advanced virtual event capabilities. You can also manage accommodation for attendees and speakers, making it ideal for larger conferences and hybrid events. 

With the Plus plan, you get access to the Pro features plus white-label event registration websites and custom domains. It is ideal for organizing product launches for your company and industry events with specific branding and design requirements.
