Monday, Aug 5, 2024 at 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EDT

VCU Student Commons, 907 Floyd Avenue, Richmond, VA, 23284, United States.

This year VPOST is taking our annual conference on the road! Rather than hosting one state-wide event, we are leaning into our goal to strengthen and establish local OST networks, by hosting local mini-conferences! Our traveling conference, Paving the Way: Connecting Out-of-School Time Locally and Across Virginia was created to intentionally be more accessible to OST staff by bringing professional development to your backyards at a more affordable rate!  Strong local networks create points of connection and establish channels for communication and collaboration across the Commonwealth. We are stronger when we act together and local-to-state networks allow us to push in the same direction for positive change.

This event is held in partnership with the Richmond Youth Development Network/VCU Mary Frances Youth Center and will include:

•        Workshops on Addressing Challenging Behaviors, Restorative Justice in Education, Neurodiversity in Youth and Music and Movement

•        A live podcast panel discussion

•        VPOST unveiling new Quality Standards for the field

•        Guided networking opportunities

Your ticket includes:

•     Breakfast and lunch

•     A COSI James Webb Space Kit (valued at $39.00)

•     Individual NAA Membership (valued at $25)

•     Entry to a door prize for local restaurants and attractions (see sponsors for details)

Please note: Payment options include check by invoice and debit/credit card via Paypal and Paypal Accounts. A 20% discounts for groups of 10 or more is provided. For technical assistance with payment, please contact Bridget Langer at Bridget.Langer@v-post.org.

Growing up in both the U.S. and Nigeria, I witnessed the impact of my local community in shaping my path toward a degree in chemical engineering. Through everyday activities like grocery shopping, cooking, raising chickens, learning how to best purify our drinking water, and even making my own tie-dyed outfits, I saw the magic of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) all around me. When I lived in Cambodia for three years, working alongside students and their families in Kampong Speu province, teaching chemistry to high schoolers in urban Phnom Penh, and leading community outreach efforts in STEM with students and educators across the country, I was reminded of the power our communities have and their influence on our youth, especially for youth of color. After more than two decades of experience in the tech, education and nonprofit sectors, I’m coming back to what ignited my passion for community, education, and STEM as a young girl by working with organizations so that every child, regardless of their background, sees themselves in STEM.
