I define a “social event” as a gathering where the purpose is to bring people together in a group so they can socialize. Parties are social gatherings, even if you put a modifier in front of it, such as “birthday party” or “housewarming party”. The ostensible goal is for people to get together and have fun, even if the host only did it to get gifts.
However, when there’s a functional purpose to the gathering (beyond receiving gifts), it stops being social. That’s why lectures aren’t social. Professional meetings aren’t social. Funerals aren’t social, although wakes can be. Weddings aren’t social, although receptions are.
It’s just me, but I think that for an event to be defined as social, socializing has to be the goal and purpose. Once you sneak in something else (MLM anyone?) it stops being a purely social event.
