This workshop is kindly being hosted and funded by Bord na Móna.

Wetland Plant Identification on Rehabilitated Cutaways and the use of plant species as ecological indicators (Bord na Móna – Lough Boora Discovery Park).

This course is aimed at individuals interested in peatland/wetland plant identification and ecology particularly those working in the environmental field and anybody else with a general interest.  The course will be led by the Bord na Móna Ecology Team at Lough Boora Discovery Park, Co. Offaly. The Ecology Team comprises team members, Dr Mark McCorry, David Fallon and Barry O’Loughlin, whose main role is to plan and manage cutaway bog rehabilitation. The workshop will start with a short indoor introductory session. The workshop will then move outside where a range of different habitat types on cutaway bog will be explored including wet and dry areas, and areas with peat or with exposed glacial materials.  This course will aim to help participants improve their plant identification skills, including rushes, sedges and aquatic species, using field guides, keys and hand lens.  This course will also focus on the use of plants as ecological indicators in a peatland cutaway landscape.
