Event Abstract

The Royal Aeronautical Society Sir Richard Fairey named lecture commemorates the life and work of British aircraft designer and manufacturer, Sir Richard Fairey. The lectures take the future of aviation as its theme, often presenting advanced theories or developments in the industry.

The 56th Sir Richard Fairey named lecture will look to provide an overview of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme (known as Team Tempest) and its evolvement into today’s Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

The speaker will address why we need GCAP. Understanding the threat picture the UK and her allies face, and why we have this next-generation combat air requirement. Explores the future operational environment, recognising the importance of interoperability and how GCAP has been designed with our Allies and partners at its very heart to maximise the exportability potential.

An overview of the strengths of this ground-breaking trilateral partnership and the challenges GCAP faces to develop the next-generation fighter jet by 2035. Will evidence progress in setting up empowered organisations to deliver GCAP to help avoid pitfalls seen on previous programmes of international collaboration and unlock benefits which go beyond the likes of NETMA and OCCAR.

Ahead of the lecture, there will be a brief session for the host of the Royal Aeronautical Society Heathrow Branch 2025 Annual General Meeting.
