Dr. Benjamin Bikman, PhD. is a BYU Professor, a scientist, and a researcher. His research focus is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Driven by his academic training (PhD. in Bioenergetics and postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders), he is currently exploring the contrasting roles of insulin and ketones as key drivers of metabolic function. Breakout Sessions

Dr. David Thomson, is an Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at BYU. Like most tissues in the body, skeletal muscle is also capable of repairing itself after a damaging injury. Unfortunately, these growth and repair processes often become short-circuited in old age and other muscle-wasting conditions such as cancer cachexia. His research focuses on:

1)Understanding the biological basis of muscle-wasting in aging, cancer, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes

2)Discovering therapeutic approaches for improving muscle size and function in these diseases

AMP-activated protein kinase is a molecular switch that is critical in maintaining healthy skeletal muscle metabolism and function. We are currently focusin go n developing a novel AMPK-activating drug to improve muscle function in aging, cachexia, and other muscle-wasting conditions. We are also interested in identifying other targets that may prove helpful in these disorders.

Weston Brandon

Presenter

Breakout Sessions

Weston Brandon's work was forged under extreme pressure. Just days after the premature birth of his son, his wife passed away unexpectedly, leaving him navigating the overwhelming grief while his newborn fought for survival in the NICU. In a moment where most would shut down, Weston was forced to operate, make decisions, and keep moving forward inside a high-stakes medical environment.

That experience shaped his understanding of what happens when pressure is not managed well, and what becomes possible when it is.

Today, Weston Brandon is a keynote speaker specializing in burnout prevention and sustainable performance for teams operating under pressure. He works with healthcare organizations, universities, and high-performance environments to help leaders and teams improve retention, strengthen resilience, and execute at a higher level without burning out.

At the core of his work is the D.R.I.V.E Framework, a practical, repeatable system that equips individuals and teams to regulate stress in real time, challenge limiting beliefs, and build the internal resilience required to perform consistently in demanding environments. His approach blends lived experience, neuroscience-backed principles, and actionable tools leaders can apply immediately within their teams.

Weston is trusted by healthcare organizations, university athletic departments, and student leadership groups to deliver high-impact keynotes that translate into stronger team cohesion, improved performance, and more resilient cultures. His work helps organizations move from reactive burnout cycles to sustainable systems that hold up under real-world pressure.
