The Invention of a Garden – Matenadaran and Gulbenkian in Dialogue

Paula Corte-Real, Responsible for the Maintenance and Programming of the Gulbenkian Garden

Sona Baloyan, Responsible for International Affairs, Matenadaran Institute-Museum
Marina Mkhitaryan, Director for Strategic Partnerships and Impact, Armenia Tree Project
Moderator: Nairi Khatchadourian, Curator, Director of AHA collective

Venue: AHA collective

Date: October 23, 7:30-8:30PM

What does it mean to create and care for a garden, and what role can it play in a city? How did the Gulbenkian Garden in Lisbon come to be conceived as an integral part of the museum, and how has its evolution since its creation in the 1960s reflected the vision and programming of the institution? What insights and visions emerged from the co-creation process for the Matenadaran Garden in November 2025, and how are these being translated into the garden’s final landscape design today?

Drawing on the experiences of two museum gardens, one established and one emerging, Paula Corte-Real, Sona Baloyan, Marina Mkhitaryan, and Nairi Khatchadourian will discuss how these gardens are conceived and evolve, their place within urban life, their relationship to their respective museums, and the ecological thinking that informs them.

Free entrance with prior registration.

About Organizer

AHA collective Organizer name

AHA collective is a curatorial practice engaged internationally, rooted in Yerevan, Armenia. Founded in 2019 by curator and art historian Nairi Khatchadourian, AHA collective's work is situated at the intersection of contemporary art, independent publishing, critical museology, and placemaking. At the core of AHA collective lies a commitment to curating as a social and political engagement, one that questions institutional frameworks and complex narratives, while reimagining exhibition formats, modes of artistic production and mediation, and exploring the role of placemaking across urban and rural contexts. AHA’s gallery in Yerevan exhibits and sells works by artists from diverse backgrounds across the modern and contemporary eras, with a strong focus on emerging voices and overlooked figures from Armenia and its diaspora. Through curated exhibitions, public programs, and critical dialogue, the gallery contributes to a broader recognition of Armenian art within the global cultural discourse.
