On Tuesday, July 15th at 7 p.m., LFA is pleased to host a talk by Talinn Grigor titled 'The Hyphenated Architect: Armenian Agencies in Iran’s Modern Architecture.'
Talinn Grigor is Professor of Art and Architectural History at the University of California, Davis. Her research focuses on late 18th- to 20th-century architectural and art histories through postcolonial, race, feminist, and critical theories grounded in Iran, Armeno-Iran, and Parsi India.
This talk asks why, given the staunchly nationalist policies of the 1930s, many of the indigenous modernist architects belong to Iran’s Armenian minority. Or rather, why did so many young professionals—many of whom were women—from the Irano-Armenian community choose the field of architecture as their career and found success in shaping Iran’s modernist built and middle-class environments? Challenging canonical art histories of the Modern Movement and nationalist histories of Area Studies, the study explores Armenian agencies in reconsidering art history’s “global turn.”
