Presentation Overview:

This talk will give an overview of the London Tunnels section of the High Speed 2 project in the UK.  This section, comprising Contracts S1 & S2, covers approximately 26km of the overall route, predominantly in tunnel, running from Euston Station in central London to the western outskirts of the city.  The tunnels are a combined of bored, mined and cut and cover construction together with ventilation shafts, cross passages and large underground structures.  As well as a description of the main elements of the works, the talk will cover some of the challenges of constructing tunnels within a dense urban setting and in close proximity to a major existing operational railway.

Speakers

Mark has played a major role in a number of large high profile infrastructure projects in the UK including High Speed 1, King's Cross Underground Station redevelopment, Canary Wharf Crossrail Station, Crossrail and Thames Tideway.  He has worked on a number of global projects including Doha Metro in Qatar, Shatin Central Link in Hong King and Riyadh Metro Project in Saudi Arabia.

Mark has been with Arup for 28 years and is currently a Major Project Leader / Director.  Having spent the previous 7 years working as Project Director on the design of the London Tunnels section of the High Speed 2 railway project in the UK, Mark moved to Toronto in June 2026 to take up the role of Project Director working on the Bloor Yonge Capacity Improvement project for the TTC .
