Welcome to the South Wales British Society of paediatric Dentistry Study Day 2024. 

The Theme of the day is 'Getting it right for our Paediatric Patients: A Whole Child Approach to Care'.

We have a range of fantastic speakers who will be discussing Oral Medicine conditions in children, Positive Behaviour Management and Endodontics in paediatric patients. We are delighted to welcome speakers from Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, who will be discussing the challenges of providing dental and oral care to children and young adults with learning disabilities and complex needs. 

We are also delighted to welcome Professor Paula Waterhouse, President of the BSPD, who will be delivering her presidential address on Inclusivity in our Dental undergraduate Education. 

The day will finalise with an annual general meeting, at which your attendance is welcomed. If you have any items you would like to raise, please inform us in advance by contacting southwalesbspd@gmail.com.

There will be a limited number of dental nurse bursaries available. Please contact southwalesbspd@gmail.com to obtain a bursary application form. 

Bursary application submission deadline: 29th January 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by Monday 5th February. 


Car Parking 

Car parking spaces are available underneath the hotel. There are a limited number of spaces available on a first come first serve basis. Please input your registration number on the tablets available at the hotel reception. Conference parking is currently £9.00 per car (please note this is subject to change). 

Alternative parking is available at the NCP car park on Dumfries place, Cardiff, CF10 3FN or council car parking to the left side of the hotel outside Cardiff University. Please allow sufficient time for parking.

Hailing from Lancashire, Paula moved to Newcastle to study dentistry in 1985 and never left the northeast! Following house jobs and a short stint in general practice, Paula became a junior lecturer in Child Dental Health at Newcastle University. Soon afterwards, she was awarded FDS RCS (Edinburgh) with the Dean’s Medal and embarked on her part time PhD, whilst she undertook her specialist training, teaching qualifications, spending some time within south Tyneside CDS and looking after a young family. She was awarded ISFE and her PhD in 2000 and became a Senior Lecturer and Hon Cons in paed dent in 2007. Through her academic career she has been involved in research and teaching and supervised multiple PhDs and higher degrees. Paula has led both paediatric dentistry undergrad teaching and primary dental care in ‘outreach’ and has been an educational supervisor/clinical trainer for numerous StRs over the years. She was the School’s Athena SWAN champion and first ever director of EDI within the School. Paula is currently the Degree Programme Director for BDS, pledging to work with colleagues to increase the inclusivity of the dental curriculum at Newcastle University. She was promoted to Chair in paediatric dentistry in 2021 and is delighted to be BSPD National President 2023-24.

She has an interest in complex mucosal disease. She obtained a PGCert in Dental Education from the University of Bedfordshire in 2018. Outside of work, Melanie enjoys spending time with her family and walking in the countryside.
