Event details

Understanding soils is critical to conservation and land use planning that supports sustainable agriculture, forestry and greener urban, suburban and rural communities. If you know your soils, you know and can better manage your land.

This one-day conference will focus on soil information resources available through the USDA Soil Survey. We’ll provide updates on recent changes to the data and help you understand how to use it. The day will include classroom workshops and field demonstrations.

Who should attend? Natural Resource management and environmental protection professionals; agricultural commission and conservation members; farmers and other landowners and managers can all benefit from this worthwhile event! Attendees can expect to learn about how:

  • the soils of Massachusetts formed and why they are variable,
  • soil survey information represents soil characteristics on the landscape
  • soil morphology reflects soil-water relationships and its application to water table depth and wetland identification, and
  • soil behavioral interpretations are developed, examples of which are to be determined based on the backgrounds of registered attendees.

This training has been approved for up to 7.0 training contact hours (TCH) for Soil Evaluator (SE) renewal under the Massachusetts Title 5 program.

This training has been also approved for up to 5.5 credits, category I, for the purposes of MA Forester Licensing.

A certificate of completion will be provided to all participants.
