Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment to people with substance use disorders and those at risk of developing these disorders. SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. Primary care centers, hospital emergency rooms, trauma centers, and other community settings provide opportunities for early intervention with at-risk substance users before more severe consequences occur. This workshop will review the steps of SBIRT and provide insights into the need of expansion for SBIRT screening across the continuum of the behavioral health workforce field. Attention will be given to how to incorporate SBIRT into current prevention and intervention programming and how-to refer to treatment or harm reduction services for individuals in need. Prerequisite SBIRT for Behavioral Health Professionals through Health Knowledge.
