Biodiversity loss is an issue in all parts of the world, yet hasn't been receiving the attention that it should demand, not only from a moral standpoint but also given the urgency of the threats that it poses to society across the world. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and open data infrastructure that is providing the necessary precursory building blocks for people to answer questions regarding this global loss of biodiversity so that we can keep moving forward with solutions and greater clarity of vision in how we can tackle and mitigate this problem. This event will hopefully flag this alarming issue to an Irish audience.

This public symposium which coincides with GBIF's annual Governing Board meeting, is a full-day event and will highlight some of the work that GBIF and its global network is doing to mobilise biodiversity data for research and to inform decision making for global biodiversity action. It will also showcase where data has been used at the regional, national and local levels to engage communities and improve knowledge of how biodiversity is changing.

Invited international guest speakers include:

- Donald Hobern, of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, Denmark

- Thomas M. Orrell of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, U.S.A.

- Eugenio Gervasini of the European Commission Joint Research Centre at Varese, Italy

- Jeffrey Manuel of the South Africa National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), South Africa

The full programme will also include speakers from Ireland, talking about work they are doing to support biodiversity research and implement biodiversity policy. Download the full programme for the event by heading over to this website page: http://www.biodiversityireland.ie/gbif-gb25/

Lunch and refreshments will be provided for attendees on the day at the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel where the event is taking place.
