Autism in Psychotherapy: Opportunities for Healing Through the Neurodiversity Paradigm

In this talk, Erin will give an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder from a neurodiversity perspective. She will review the diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder with a focus on how the diagnostic criteria may miss or be misapplied to AFAB and BIPOC individuals. She will use personal examples to discuss the gender disparities in autism diagnosis and the harm that is perpetuated when neurodiversity is dismissed as "just anxiety" or a "sensitive personality." Erin will give a brief history of the neurodiversity movement, the social model of disability, and share how concepts from these movements can be applied to psychotherapy practice. She will conclude with one or more clinical vignettes to illustrate the usefulness of identifying autism in psychotherapeutic practice and will also leave time for questions and discussion.

About our presenter: Erin Brandel Dykhuizen, MA, MSW, LICSW (https://erinbdlicsw.com/) (she/her), is a psychotherapist in private practice. She specializes in helping autistic adults and ADHDers resolve chronic pain and trauma and appreciate their unique strengths while viewing their limitations within the social context. Erin holds a Masters in Clinical Social Work from St. Catherine University/University of St. Thomas, a Master of Arts from Yale University, and a Bachelor's degree from Grinnell College. She has been a clinical social worker for over 15 years and is certified in Clinical Hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, certified in Prolonged Exposure Therapy by the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety, a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, trained in EMDR, and an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider.  Erin is a mother to three neurodivergent kids, and was recently diagnosed with ADHD and autism herself.
