Speaker/Course Highlights:
THURSDAY - Creating a Sustainable Midwifery Practice with Madeline Lutz CPM
During her clinical training, Madeline Lutz became fascinated and exhausted by midwives’ on-call lifestyle. She completed research that produced both information on the nature and contributing factors of burn-out, as well as guidelines to introduce a work-life balance to a professional that struggles with finding a business model that supports self-care. Madeline is passionate about midwifery and bringing the Midwives Model of Care to more American families, and believes that modern midwifery culture must be deliberate in addressing these concepts, which may keep midwives healthy and sustained. This presentation will discuss the negative impact of the on-call lifestyle on both midwife and client and provide specific group practice models as well as suggested guidelines for creating more self-care and work-life balance into midwives lives. Midwife burn-out is an all too-common casualty in our profession and by discussing this reality, Madeline hopes we can make midwifery a more attainable and sustainable career by focusing on the importance of self-care and work/life balance. Madeline Lutz is a CPM in Atlanta, Georgia, and a graduate of Midwives College Utah. An extended version of this presentation was given at the Midwives Alliance of North America Conference in Atlanta this past fall. In her spare time (ha) Madeline likes to read, to travel and to coach and train crossfit.
FRIDAY - S.T.A.B.L.E. is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.
First introduced in 1996 in the US and Canada, S.T.A.B.L.E. has grown internationally to include instructor training and courses in more than 45 countries.
taught by Lynette Johnson, RNC, BSN, MSA who is the Neonatal Outreach Coordinator at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. She has been involved in neonatal nursing since 1987 and has been a STABLE instructor for 14 years. She has taught infant stabilization classes to Physician, Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Midwives, Paramedics and EMTs. As a regional NRP instructor she has taught classes to a variety of midwives and has an understanding of the unique situations midwives encounter.
