Managing Individual and Organizational Professionalism & Discipline in a law enforcement agency

Topics Include:

  • Defining & Evaluating "Professionalism"
  • Needed Integration of Critical Systems
  • An Evaluation System That Actually Works
  • A Supervision & Discipline System That Actually Works
  • A Recognition & Reward System That Actually Works
  • Strategic Planning for Accomplishing All This

Professionalism is a commonly asserted goal in the law enforcement profession but before it can be properly evaluated, it must be clearly defined. This training does that, then illustrates how a systems approach to evaluation can help heighten both individual and organizational professionalism agency-wide.

Evaluation systems don’t have to be the failures they have been historically. Properly designed and well implemented, they can: improve performance and professionalism; identify, recognize and reward the good-to-great; identify and remediate poor performance; and encourage the mediocre to raise their game.

Recognition is the #1 driver of motivation and human performance in professional endeavor. Recurring recognition helps with professional focus and improves performance and morale, leading to more effective recruiting and better retention.

Discipline is adherence to defined standards. A lot of punitive discipline suggests a poorly disciplined organization. In a “well-disciplined” organization, systems work properly and people do what they’re supposed to do, including follow the rules – holding themselves accountable with little, if any, need for punishment.

Strategic Planning makes possible the otherwise impossible. Broad long-term planning can achieve major goals that would be difficult or impossible to do in a shorter term and without associated scheduling and scaling – and can improve agency focus.

This training is a mid-level dive into these topics and explains needed leadership initiaives and frameworks.
