The ongoing topic of Brexit has been a point of great contention and debate amongst the British public since the first referendum vote to leave the EU in 2016. Many are still unsure on what the term means, or the implications attached to leaving the European Union. Thus, the aim of this talk will be for the special guest speaker Professor Carl Levy to give students an insight to the historical and contemporary driving forces behind Brexit and understand the potential consequences of the U.K.’s departure from the EU on a European and global scale. The talk will hopefully allow you to draw connections between Brexit and events unfolding in US politics and society, in addition to thinking critically about the impact that Brexit may have on the U.K.’s relationship with the U.S.A. in the future.

The talk's outline:

  • an overview and history of the EU
  • insights to the beginnings of the UK's membership of the EU and relationship since
  • key national sentiments and developments leading to the EU referendum
  • discussion of the aftermath of the EU referendum (2016-19)
  • discussion of the current UK electoral campaign as relates to Brexit
  • the future of Brexit negotiations at this point in time

Recommended readings:

No background knowledge is necessary to attend but for those seeking some background, we might suggest this summary by the BBC.  Additionally, Professor Levy's own piece, written in the immediate aftermath of the referendum, offers an interesting starting point to consider exactly how much has and hasn't changed since.

Points to consider for discussion:

  • how Brexit might influence American interests and vice versa
  • how Brexit is perceived in the US and in Britain and the enduring impact that Brexit may have upon them

Fancy a Cuppa?

We will be serving up distinctly British delights of tea, biscuits and sweets to accompany the event.
