The behavioral support known as the Incredible 5-Point Scale provides a visual representation of social behaviors,emotions, and abstract ideas. It is a simple scale used to teach social understanding. This session will focus on how to use the 5-Point scale in your classroom. 1 Session Block
Citizen Science: engaging students in data collection and exploration. We will briefly go through Citizen Science--what it is, its uses, and a few practical examples that teachers can use with students of almost any age (though best for 5th grade and up). We will then go outside and put these skills to practice and brainstorm their application for Logan-Hocking teachers. 1 Session Block
We will examine Rural Action's lesson plans focused on teaching symbiosis to 5th grade students, though this may be applicable to grades 4-6, using local examples and games. We will also make connections to evolution that tie in with high school environmental science courses. 1 Session Block
The natural history of Ohio presentation will cover the formation of some of Ohio’s natural features and give a broad view of Ohio’s landscape prior to European contact. Then we will delve into land use and changes post European contact, and the status of our natural resources in the state today. 1 Session Block
Participants will understand the characteristics of a student who is gifted in creative thinking ability, the implications for this learning style in your classroom, and methods for differentiating lessons to meet the needs of these students. 1 Session Block
Participants will recognize the benefits of learning centers as an instructional strategy allowing students to direct their own learning. Participants will learn how to implement learning centers in their own classrooms to increase student engagement. 1 Session Block
Participants will begin to answer the question, "How can this student be identified as 'gifted' when he or she has some learning challenges?” This session will address identification considerations for twice-exceptional (2e)students, provide common characteristics of students who are both gifted and disabled, explain obstacles and learning difficulties faced by these students, identify the roles and responsibilities of teachers for addressing the needs of 2e students, and suggest some adaptations, accommodations, and available resources. 1 Session Block
