The talk will be centered on garages, more specifically their unconventional uses. In contemporary Yerevan, the garage goes far beyond the walls that define it, harboring such characters as entrepreneurs and craftspeople. Apart from the classical post-Soviet ‘garage economy’, diving into the backyards of Yerevan’s busy central streets, one finds, for a lack of a better word, ‘hipsterized’ garages hosting fashionable cafes, bars, and shops. From being concealed and marginal, garages are turning into penetrable public spaces and desired locations for creatives. From closets of masculinity, they are increasingly being feminized.
