Class Description

Come learn how to draw from observation with basic to advanced-level life drawing techniques! This class, taught by Erin McAtee, will center around “learning to see”; gaining awareness of the beauty around us and practicing ways to capture this beauty through various drawing techniques and materials. We will walk through a range of drawing exercises together, including still life, landscape, portraiture, and compositional techniques, working inside and out of the museum studio space. All skill levels are welcome, as there will be opportunities for individualized and group instruction, so come learn the basics or just come to practice drawing with a group of other engaged art students! All techniques learned in this class are easily transferrable to personal studio practice or continuing to learn and practice on your own at home.

Materials List

(1) 9"x12" sketchbook, (1) 18" x 24" newsprint pad, soft drawing pencils (3B or 4B), pencil sharpener, size 6 bamboo paint brush. Any extra supplies, such as specialty papers (i.e. 18" x 24" Canson or white drawing paper) are not required but students may purchase these if they want.

Bring a snack if you tend to get hungry over the course of a few hours.

About the Instructor

Erin McAtee hails from Lafayette, Indiana and has a background in art education and mission work. Since graduating from Ball State University in 2016, she has found a diverse range of experiences in teaching and volunteering to share her artistic gifts within various types of communities, particularly those she has volunteered with at Western Connecticut State University (Danbury, CT) and those she has served in the Manhattan and Bronx area. She utilizes the processes of printmaking, drawing, and painting in her work to focus on the beautiful and grotesque in humanity, relationships, and the innate dignity found within all of us. Erin will be working as an artist-in-residence at the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture in New York City this Fall.
