The session will cover the overview of Lean Design Management, highlighting its importance in improving design efficiency and reducing waste across project workflows. It introduces global frameworks from AIA and RIBA that reinforce lean design principles, alongside the role of BIM in strengthening information flow, reducing rework, and enhancing coordination. The discussion also explores sustainability alignment through LEED and ParkSmart, demonstrating how lean methodologies support greener outcomes, complemented by insights from IStructE’s sustainability map. Additionally, the session reflects on the evolving responsibilities of the structural engineer and the growing emphasis on modern, integrated design management practices. Practical strategies for embedding lean thinking throughout the design process are presented, with a focus on value
creation, continuous improvement, and more effective project delivery.
Calum Perey, IStructE Regional Group Chair, will be moderating the session and there will be questions and answers at the end.
