Class Description
Students will learn the basics of a medieval calligraphy alphabet called the "Carolingian script" and an introduction to "Lombardic capitals." After an introduction to the tools we will use, some warm-up exercises, and a little practice, students will select a short quotation, write it on a blank bookmark, then paint and decorate the first capital.

About the Instructor
Heather Bungard-Janney is a medieval calligrapher and illuminator and has served as a "scribe" for an international medieval reenactment society, the Society for Creative Anachronism since 2000. In 2015, she was part of the "Calf to Codex Project, " which brought together artisans from many disciplines to create a medieval book of poems, songs, and stories from scratch. When she is not pretending to be a woman who might have lived in the 15th century, she works as a freelance editor, henna artist, and mom in West Lafayette. The summer session of 2019 marks her first time teaching calligraphy to a non-reenactor audience.
