Event Abstract

As the quest for carbon-free aviation gathers speed, manufacturers are looking to electric-powered and hydrogen-powered aircraft to lead the way forward. In this month’s RAeS Heathrow Branch lecture, the Guest Speaker, Captain Les Evans examines what progress has been made to-date and the issues faced by these technologies.

He will consider the main developments; battery-powered light aircraft, personal air vehicles (PAVs), and eVTOL air taxis; hydrogen fuel cell-powered prop aircraft; and hydrogen-powered jet aircraft. Each technology has had its own successes and faced its own difficulties.

Whilst not an expert in these technologies, Les has used his experience as a test pilot and commercial pilot to research the field and to present his results in a manner that is comprehensible to the layperson.
