Language is never neutral. It has the power to shape our reality, influence relationships and reinforce or challenge existing power dynamics. Words can include or exclude, heal or harm, empower or oppress. Because language is fluid and constantly evolving, our understanding of what is respectful and inclusive must evolve too.

This interactive workshop explores the role of language in creating equitable, respectful and inclusive environments and why our micro-messages play such a crucial role in inclusive communication. This workshop supports attendees to recognise and raise awareness of exclusive or alienating language, understand unconscious biases, learn best practices and develop skills in inclusive communication for a more positive and productive environment.

Through discussion, reflection and practical exercises, attendees will examine how everyday words and expressions can impact diverse identities and experiences. The session will provide practical strategies for using more inclusive language that acknowledges and values difference, while building confidence to navigate the fluid and sometimes complex nature of language in professional and social contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise the power of language in shaping perceptions, relationships and social dynamics
  • Identify how language can perpetuate exclusion, bias and inequity
  • Explain why language is fluid and how cultural, social and historical contexts influence its meaning
  • Apply principles of inclusive language to communicate more respectfully and effectively in the work context
  • Reflect on personal language use and develop strategies to adopt more inclusive practices in everyday interactions
