We are thrilled you will be learning with us. We are proud to be offering a number of classes for learners of all backgrounds and interests.
We have priced 1-hour classes at $10 per class in hopes of making these classes be accessible to all. The most important thing to us is that no one is excluded from learning! Scholarship pricing and monthly payment plans are readily available. Kim is readily available to help open the doors for you! Reach her by email or by phone at 954-249-8290.
This fee does not cover all of our costs so, if you are able, we hope you will make a scholarship donation when you register, sponsor a Day of Learning or underwrite your favorite teacher’s class!
All of our Wednesday classes are held in the Katz Building on the Campus of the David Posnak JCC. Our fall line up includes:
FIRST HOUR: 9:30am-10:30am
Revealing the PaRDeS (orchard) of Torah with Rabbi Akiva Mann
In this course, we will dig deep into seminal and fundamental verses in the Torah, by means of PaRDeS - Peshat (literal), Remez (metaphor), Derush (imagination), Sod (secret). Using these four different levels of interpretation and understanding, will enable us to: make spiritual connections to the text; unearth contemporary insights from the ancient sources; learn how to hear and feel the Divine voice in Torah, anew.
The course is designed for all those who seek to gain access to the depth and vitality of the "inner Torah," regardless of background or Bible study experience.
Jews of the Caribbean with Bruce Greenberg
The Inquisition banished Jews from Spain and Portugal in the 15th century and the resulting diaspora saw many seek refuge in more tolerant countries like Holland. Dutch Jews eventually settled in Brazil, Cayenne and Suriname and made their way throughout the Caribbean Islands. Since that time Jews have made their way to the Caribbean from both Sephardic and Ashkenazic locales and there is an active Jewish community on many of the islands today. Learn about Alexander Hamilton's Jewish Caribbean. Please join Bruce Greeberg this semester as we tour the Caribbean in search of Jewish life.
SECOND HOUR: 10:45am-11:45am
Making Jewish Mystical Language and Concepts Understandable and Meaningful to All (Including You!!) with Rabbi Akiva Mann
Throughout the ages, our mystical masters have accumulated a wonderfully rich and deep vocabulary which lends to the mind that which the heart already knows. Join us and be amazed at how the wisdom behind mystical language will enhance and help expand your soul's vocabulary.
Pirkei Avot: Chapters of the Fathers Judaism Standing on One Foot with Rabbi Norman Lipson
Four short chapters (but sometimes five….it’s a long story), compiling over 200 years of Jewish wisdom, ethics, theology, philosophy and life lessons from 60+ rabbis and written in wonderfully elliptical and deceptively “simple” Rabbinic Hebrew. Together, we will study, debate, agree/disagree and search for truth, as we explore this most beloved of Talmudic tractates.
Talking to God with Rabbi David Paskin
Jews believe that all people have the capacity to communicate with the Divine. For many Jews this gift has been left in the synagogue - relegated to formal worship following a strict pattern and order. In "Talking to God" we will explore how the siddur (prayerbook) is but a tool to help us engage in the spiritual exercise of prayer and learn how to open our lips to declare God's praise.
Scholarships are available. Please contact kim@ijkl.org for more information.
