Second Quarter: Wednesdays, Nov. 28 Dec. 5, 12, 19 Jan 9, 16
We are thrilled you will be learning with us. We are proud to be offering a number of classes for learners of all backgrounds and interests.
We have priced 1-hour classes at $10 per class in hopes of making these classes be accessible to all. The most important thing to us is that no one is excluded from learning! Scholarship pricing and monthly payment plans are readily available. Kim is readily available to help open the doors for you! Reach her by email or by phone at 954-249-8290.
This fee does not cover all of our costs so, if you are able, we hope you will make a scholarship donation when you register, sponsor a Day of Learning or underwrite your favorite teacher’s class!
All of our Wednesday classes are held in the Katz Building on the Campus of the David Posnak JCC. Our fall line up includes:
FIRST HOUR: 9:30am-10:30am
The Stories of Shammai, Hillel, and Jesus with Rabbi Akiva Mann
Explore the radical revision of Judaism by the most famous and influential sage of the Talmud, Hillel. This innovative and universal thinker was one of the first champions of Jewish pluralism and influenced Jewish thought for centuries as well as ours. Judaism would not be what it is today but for Hillel. A segment of our course will also focus on the relationship between Hillel the Sage and the Christian Messiah and how their messages and teachings overlapped and differed. Join us and discover why we need Hillel now, more than ever!!!
Israel as the Center of the World with Dr. Leon Weissberg
For 3000 years every world power in its time considered the Middle East central to their need to control their segments of the world. We will go through three thousand years of Middle Eastern history to see how this unfolded and how the Jewish Holy Land was always right in the middle of it. We’ll explore how the Jews lived under the various rulers that controlled the land for three millennia from pre-Biblical through the 21st century.
SECOND HOUR: 10:45am-11:45am
Making Jewish Mystical Language and Concepts Understandable and Meaningful to All (Including You!!) with Rabbi Akiva Mann
Throughout the ages, our mystical masters have accumulated a wonderfully rich and deep vocabulary which lends to the mind that which the heart already knows. Join us and be amazed at how the wisdom behind mystical language will enhance and help expand your soul's vocabulary.
Pirkei Avot: Chapters of the Fathers Judaism Standing on One Foot with Rabbi Norman Lipson
Four short chapters (but sometimes five….it’s a long story), compiling over 200 years of Jewish wisdom, ethics, theology, philosophy and life lessons from 60+ rabbis and written in wonderfully elliptical and deceptively “simple” Rabbinic Hebrew. Together, we will study, debate, agree/disagree and search for truth, as we explore this most beloved of Talmudic tractates.
The Rabbinic Mind - Gemara with Rabbi David Paskin
The Rabbinic Mind will explore the thinking and reasoning behind the major rabbinic texts. We will ask: Why did the rabbis compose these texts? What functions did they serve in antiquity and what functions do they serve today? What are some of the linguistic and religious tools used in crafting these texts. In this second quarter we will examine selections from the later rabbinic texts of the Gemara.
Scholarships are available. Please contact kim@ijkl.org for more information.
