Calculating embodied carbon is the first step we can take to understanding how to reduce it. It allows you to identify embodied carbon hotspots in a design, evaluate different design options based on their climate impact, and therefore drive decision making. Orlando and Dr John Orr (University of Cambridge) co-authored a guide for the IStructE that interprets and elaborates on industry best practice guidance and standards for calculating embodied carbon to drive more consistency across our profession and encourage uptake of carbon calculations. Orlando will explain the process of calculating embodied carbon as set out by the IStructE How to calculate embodied carbon guide.
