FCHC Teaching and Learning Mini-Conference

Kelsey Behringer has trained over 10,000 educators around the intersection of A.I. and pedagogy, helping educators implement best practices that advance student voice, agency, and purpose.  She is the CEO of the education technology organization Packback, which is an "AI writing tutor for every student and an AI grading assistant for every teacher". She has held numerous roles at the organization from being an educator trainer, manager, director, VP, and COO before starting as CEO.Packback's A.I. has been used by over 1,500,000 students and 600 colleges and districts to help every student develop their own unique voice through receiving live, instant, real-time feedback as they write.Kelsey approaches her work through the lens of her experiences as a former STEM teacher in Chicago and Indianapolis. She is a Fast Company Executive Board contributor, and also hosts monthly webinars for teachers and professors where she gives recommendations about A.I. in the classroom.

One of my favorite courses to teach is Introduction to Philosophy and I have taught more than 60 sections of this course, a number of which are honors sections. In this presentation I will share my top five thoughts on teaching this course, which may generalize to teaching other courses.

In this presentation, I will discuss the creation of an online pop culture magazine, Past/Present/Pop, with students in my Composition I and Composition II Honors courses, primarily focusing on how students engaged with me in a robust editorial process that encouraged significant reimagination of their writing and ideas.

This session explores implementation of experiential learning in first-year honors pedagogy, providing a brief overview and best practices based on the process of designing and revising my political simulation course. Such curriculum affords students opportunities not only for understanding complexities of content but also for fostering engagement within Honors communities.

Many students take anatomy and physiology courses as a required course to check-off their long list of courses before applying to graduate school. Traditionally, science courses are taught with a huge emphasis on lecture, memorization, and testing. Moreover, students majoring in the pre-medical and health-related sciences tend to have increased levels of stress and anxiety, negatively contributing to their quality of learning. Instead of delivering anatomy content via lectures and assessing purely based on quizzes and examinations, we taught content via discussion of medical-based literature and assignment of drawing-based projects. Just as the famous early medical illustrators such as da Vinci learned the human body by studying and drawing from human cadavers, it seems only natural that reading medical-based literature, learning the relevant anatomy, and creating illustrations could be a reimagined way of teaching and learning.

Here we present an instructional example that has been developed to facilitate collaborative undergraduate research. The course utilizes free bioinformatic resources to provide students with a research opportunity that can be replicated in a wide variety of institutions. Students have presented their protein models at conferences and graduate/professional school interviews.

There are reasons for completing an Honors Thesis. Students participate in a journey from a consumer of knowledge to a producer of knowledge and enhance their chance of success when applying for awards. We’ll discuss the challenges of recruiting students to complete an Honors Thesis and strategies for overcoming them.

In this panel, participants will discuss the possibilites for collaboration on study abroad programs for honors students between institutions in the State of Florida. Attendees are encouraged to share their current and planned trips for 2024 and beyond as well as questions and concerns regarding study abroad.

This panel will discuss how we talk about race and American racial history in the current political environment in Florida. We will discuss the consequence of laws on teaching such as the Individual Freedom Act and address how we share our expertise with students in this restrictive climate.

In this session, faculty from Florida Southwestern State College who offer team-taught Honors seminars will describe how they bring together material from diverse disciplines such as environmental science and nature writing, art-making and art history, and various aspects of film studies to create hands-on, project-based courses.
