The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Computer Forensics Unit (CFU) Facial Recognition Section will be hosting a free Mobile Facial Recognition class. This is the first time the DPS has offered this training and software to DPS and select Terrorism Liaison Officers (TLO's) from outside agencies.  All students will need to have a DPS computer and a valid Terminal Operator Certificate (TOC) number and will need to provide it at registration.

Mobile FR users will have access to facial recognition software from any DPS computer, including Mobile Data Computers (MDC’s) in the field.  Upon completing the required training, Mobile FR users will be able to conduct facial recognition searches of unknown subjects from still photographs using the DPS FR database to develop investigative leads in law enforcement investigations. There are currently over 80 DPS Mobile FR users statewide who have had great success in identifying unknown suspects during traffic stops, drug investigations, deceased victims, and other types of crimes. The facial recognition software also allows Mobile FR users to create photographic line-ups in the field to assist with witness identifications of suspects.

The first three days of the class will be Forensic Face Comparisons taught by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).  The last day of the class will be taught by the CFU and will teach students how to use the software and conduct FR searches.  Students will need to bring a DPS laptop and/or MDC to utilize during the class, along with their token and MIFI if applicable.  Students will need to contact the DPS Information Technology (I.T.) Department at (602) 223-2421 prior to the start of the class to make sure they have the latest version of Chrome and Adobe installed.

Schedule:

July 29, 2019, 0800-1700 hours, Forensic Face Comparisons.

July 30, 2019, 0800-1700 hours, Forensic Face Comparisons.

July 31, 2019, 0800-1200 hours, Forensic Face Comparisons.

August 1, 2019 0800-1500 hours, Morpho Face Detective.

Training will be held at the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center (ACTIC) located at 16212 N 28th Avenue Phoenix, Arizona. Students can park in front of the ACTIC or across the street in the uncovered parking spots north of the bank.  (Do not park in the bank parking lot).  All students will need a photo identification and will need to provide it to security to access the building.

The training and access to the FR system is free.  Any costs associated with travel (lodging/meals, etc.) will be the responsibility of the individual student and/or their respective agency.  Supervisor approval is required prior to signing up for the class.  If the student must cancel for any reason it will be their responsibility to find someone to attend in their place and to notify the DPS ASAP.  Those wishing to attend are encouraged to apply early as seats are limited.

For additional information about the training please contact DPS Sergeant Daniel Heltemes at 602-206-4825 or email at dheltemes@azdps.gov.
