ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA IN THE CLASSROOM

Practical ideas for English teachers

English has gone global. It’s the lingua franca of the world. More ‘non-native speakers’ use it every day than ‘native speakers’. I’m sure you’re all familiar with these statements. But what does it really mean for you as a teacher? In this workshop you will learn what English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) is and how you can raise your students’ awareness of it. You will also see what implications ELF has for teaching pronunciation, as well as why we should use ‘non-native speakers’ as language models in class. The session will be very practical in nature and at the end you will walk away with ideas and activities that you can incorporate in your teaching routine.
