EARO Hard/Code

After parallelism has done its part, sheer serial code is where the action is. There are only so many things that can happen simultaneously; and with serial computing power undergoing fundamental limitations, optimizing for speed is likely to become an increasingly important activity for all software. Sadly, much of the ample folklore on optimization is based on outdated simplistic assumptions about the computing fabric, which is dauntingly complex. Andrei's upcoming book and focus of this talk will be on optimization techniques rooted in perennial truths and trends of silicon-based computing.

Once you have the right mindset, you can find wonderful opportunities for making code faster everywhere – in your daily work, but even in classic algorithms taught in college that are considered already optimal. Join Andrei for one evening of exploration of the wonders of code optimization. We will see together how classic algorithms that have stayed unchanged for half a century can be improved, sometimes radically.
