The presentation explores the application of digital design and innovative workflows in structural engineering for the "new normal" era, contrasting conventional methods with a parametric approach. Traditional structural design, i.e. encompassing topology, shape, sizing, and material optimization, is juxtaposed with a modern parametric methodology. This advanced approach enables extensive design iterations, delivers efficient and optimized solutions, and facilitates real-time structural behaviour analysis through dynamic feedback loops, revolutionizing engineering practices to effectively meet contemporary challenges. Real-world case studies highlight practical applications through collaborations on diverse global projects. One detailed example analyses a complex steel freeform structure with over 2,000 unique connection nodes, leveraging advanced visual programming tools like Grasshopper for integrated modelling, structural analysis, and constructability assessment. Another case demonstrates AI-assisted structural topology optimization, guiding bridge design to balance structural efficiency and architectural aesthetics. A collaborative three-step process starting with the original design intent, proposing engineered improvements, and refining through iterations with clients, contractors, and fabricators, ultimately yields optimized designs for structural members and details. The presentation underscores the transformative potential of digital tools and innovative workflows to deliver cutting-edge, efficient engineering solutions in a rapidly evolving field.
