We are delighted to welcome you to the talk “Dialogue Between Light and Shadow” by Armen Ter-Mkrtchyan, organized as the closing event of the exhibition «Evoking the Light» on view at the gallery. Drawing from his extensive experience in analog photography and alternative printing processes, the artist will present a selection of series created over the past decade using the pigment-based resinotype technique.
Originally invented in the 1920s by Italian chemist and photographer Rudolfo Namias, this handmade craft is practiced by Ter-Mkrtchyan with utmost care and dedication — a century later. At odds with today’s photographic tendencies minimizing the passage of time, where light’s imprint is barely visible, Ter-Mkrtchyan lets time shape the image. Through long exposures on his handcrafted camera, sometimes lasting several hours, he allows light to fully inscribe itself onto the paper surface.
Through the use of organic and natural pigment the artist creates by grinding peach kernel, his sun-images gain a saturated and velvety depth, which transport the observer to a place in between chemistry and poetry, where light speaks through time and through its shadows. The talk will be an invitation to dive deeper into Ter-Mkrtchyan’s perception and artistic expression.
