Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this retreat for?

This retreat is specifically designed for adults living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) who are interested in meditation and mindfulness. All levels of experience are welcome—from those brand new to meditation to seasoned practitioners.

Where can I learn more about meditation prior to the retreat experience

You can join in at any of the live meditation practices offered by DiabetesSangha each week, just check out www.diabetessangha.com.

Do I need to have meditation or retreat experience to attend

Not at all! Whether you’re new to meditation or have attended retreats before, the structure is supportive for all experience levels. Guidance and instruction will be provided, especially early on, to help you feel comfortable.

What can I expect during the retreat?

Expect a mix of seated meditation, mindful movement, periods of silence, and space for reflection. The days will be structured yet spacious, with support available from facilitators as needed.

Will the retreat be completely silent?

For the majority of the retreat, yes. Silence allows us to deepen our inner experience and reduce distractions. However, you’ll have opportunities to speak during necessary times—for health needs, facilitator check-ins, or brief designated periods.

How will diabetes managment be supported during the retreat

We understand that caring for your diabetes is essential. You are welcome to manage your blood sugar as needed—whether it’s checking levels, treating a low, or stepping away for a moment. Everyone attending lives with T1D and understands the unique needs it brings. Facilitators are available for support at any time.

What types of meditation will be included?

In addition to seated meditation, we’ll offer various forms of movement meditation throughout the retreat, including walking meditation, gentle yoga, and qi gong-inspired practices. These practices are designed to help you stay grounded, connect with your body, and integrate mindfulness into all aspects of your day. No prior experience is needed.

What are the meals like?

All meals provided during the retreat will be vegetarian, balanced, and prepared with mindfulness toward the needs of people living with T1D. We will gather dietary preferences and restrictions during registration and do our best to accommodate.  Oh, and low snacks will be easily accessible!

Can I use my phone during the retreat?

We encourage limiting phone use to minimize distractions and foster a reflective environment.  We understand that many use our phone as a medical device, so just remember to keep on  vibrate mode, and check your levels during the meditation breaks.

What will I gain from attending

While each person’s experience is unique, most attendees leave with a renewed sense of ease, connection, and self-awareness. The retreat offers a chance to step away from daily routines, reflect on your life with T1D, and cultivate a more intentional and compassionate way of living—both with diabetes and beyond.
