The family of Sr. Barbara A. Hammond-Harvey-McClellan invites you to join them for an Elegant & Formal, intimate, virtual celebration honoring 80 remarkable years of life for Sr. McClellan.

 

 

Dr. Eric Summers, Vice President of Southeastern Louisiana University, Sr. McClellan's former alma mater, will present her with a virtual Honor of Excellence. This recognition is particularly special because Barbara Hammond-McClellan was one of the first students to integrate into the university back in 1962 when she was just 18 years old.

 

Barbara Ann Hammond was born on December 17th, 1944, to Daniel Buddy Hammond and Ruth Warren Hammond. She is the ninth child of 13, of whom four remain.

 

She Graduated from the 8th grade in 1959

 

 

She graduated from Greenville Park High School in Hammond, LA in 1962

 

 

She was crowned Home Comming Queen in her Senior Year 1962

 

She enrolled into Southeastern University, where her major was to become A Home Economics Teacher

 

She was a Sophomore at Southeastern University Louisiana in 1965, and due to experiencing severe racism, she decided to relocate to Oakland. CA to live with her older sister Ada Mae Ward.

 

Barbara, being multi-talented soon joined a traveling singing group under the leadership of both Wilma Chapman and Ida Coleman-Williams in 1966. Her director Wilma Chapman has these kind words to say, "I will always treasure your unwavering support for our singing group, The Carnettes, and the many unforgettable trips we shared for our singing engagements. Those moments were a testament to your incredible heart and dedication." - Wlma Chapman 

 

She Married, Edward L. Harvey Sr and gave birth to two children Eleanor and Eddie L. Harvey

 

She was and remains her children's and grandchildren's 1st teacher and role model.

 

She Married the Love of her Life, Everett (RUSTY) McClellan, in April of 1993...and they lived Happily Ever After!

 

 

From the combination of this union, many children, spouses, and grandchildren were formed.

Her siblings love her beyond measure and have always supported her throughout the years.

 

On February 27th, 2024, Barbara will receive her Lifetime Achievement Honor in person on the Southeastern Louisiana University Campus during The African American Alumni Luncheon. Her family and Classmates will be there to support her Victory.

Today we all come together on one accord to pay homage to her incredible Life  Legacy and journey of 80 years of excellence!

 

Honoring 80 Wonderful Years of Life! May The Most High continue to Bless you for the remainder of your days!

Debra Watkins spent 37 years in the East Side Union High School District in San Jose, CA, as a teacher, counselor, and project manager before retiring in 2012. During that same period, she was a founding member of the Santa Clara County Alliance of Black Educators (SCCABE), where she served as president from 1994 to 2001. In 2001, she founded the California Alliance of African American Educators (CAAAE) and the Dr. Frank S. Greene Scholars Program (GSP). Named after an African American scientist who helped pave the way for today’s computers, the GSP sends 100% of its students to college, 90% graduate in 4 years with BA or BS degrees, and 60% of those are in STEM which is about 8 times the national average for Black students. In 2015, she was one of the founders of Black Students of California United (BSCU). In 2017, Debra officially changed the name of the CAAAE to A Black Education Network (ABEN). She currently serves as Executive Director.

William S. Wainwright, Ph.D. President, Southeastern Louisiana University Dr. William S. Wainwright is the 15th president of Southeastern Louisiana University, appointed by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System on April 27, 2023. Prior to his time at Southeastern, Wainwright had accrued over 24 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education. Most recently, he served for 12 years as chancellor of Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC). During his tenure at NTCC, he helped lead exponential growth and success for the institution, expanding campuses and tripling enrollment, causing NTCC to become one of the fastest growing community colleges in the nation. Prior to NTCC, his positions included faculty member for Remington College; regional facilitator for Louisiana Technical College, Sullivan Campus; dean at Louisiana Technical College, Hammond Area Campus; dean of workforce development at Louisiana Technical College, Greater Capital Area District II; vice president of business development and training at Safety Council of the Louisiana Capital Area; chief executive officer of Delgado Community College; and more recently, interim chancellor at Delgado Community College. Scholarly contributions have also been abundant and include presentations pertaining to higher education institutions’ strategy and success, which were given across both the state and the globe. His formal education encompasses a bachelor of science in criminal justice from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, a master of education in adult and continuing education from Northwestern State University, and a doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of New Orleans. In addition to being the recipient of numerous awards and honors, Wainwright has also been deeply involved in professional and community organizations.
