David Liss RVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM)

David discovered his passion for animal health care after graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Occidental College in Los Angeles. The desire to be the best in his field led to him earning double board certification as a veterinary technician specialist in emergency/critical care and small animal internal medicine, and to technician manager appointments with two 24-hour referral/specialty facilities in Los Angeles.  Sought after by veterinary practices and conferences across the country for his training, lecturing, and consulting expertise, David is an accomplished author of numerous veterinary texts, such as Vet Tech and NAVTA Magazine. He has also been invited to speak before more than 15 international conferences, and is the recipient of the 2012 Veterinary Technician Educator of the Year award by Western Veterinary Conference.  David currently directs the Veterinary Technology program at Platt College, Los Angeles, and works as an ICU technician at VCA Veterinary Specialists of the Valley in Woodland Hills, CA, in addition to overseeing his consulting business, Veterinary Training and Consulting, Inc.

Topics:

·         What to Do in the First 5 Minutes!   Triage and Initial for Veterinary Technicians
This lecture will outline the first 5 minutes of a critical case, so that techs can better anticipate what a doctor may want and save more lives!

·         Nursing Stat!  Critical Care Patient Nursing 101
What does it take to be a technician on a critical patient?  Do you have critical thinking skills, assessment, planning? Pull it all together and keep it that way with Kirby’s Rule of 20 and CALIBRATION!

·         Garbage Gut!  Acute Pancreatitis
This lecture will present a holistic view of acute pancreatitis, focused on the dog, but some information about feline pancreatitis will be presented as well.

·         The Electricity of EKGs
Monitoring the ECG is an essential tool for anesthesia, critical care, or cardiology practice. Veterinary technicians should be familiar with normal electrical physiology, as well as a uniform approach to interpreting abnormal heart rhythms.

·         Pain Management
The recognition and treatment of pain is an incredibly important part of the hospitalized veterinary patient's regimen. The veterinary technician, in conjunction with the veterinarian, can discuss and implement a multi-modal approach to managing pain in critically ill patients.
