Event Abstract
In this RAeS Heathrow Branch lecture, the presentation will cover Winston Churchill's association with the 'Air' from the very beginning.
The speaker, Julian Stapleton, apart from his own 25-year service in the Royal Air Force, has drawn much of what he will impart from the personal recollections of relatives and other RAF aircrew who flew in the Second World War and who benefited from Churchill's leadership and oratory.
Julian's talk will set out Winston Churchill's early interest in innovation and science. In 1912, although aircraft were still in their infancy, Churchill started taking flying lessons at the age of 37, just nine years after the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers.
After graduating from Sandhurst in 1894, seeing active service in Cuba, India, Sudan and South Africa in the late 1890s, and in Europe in the First World War, Churchill was appointed Secretary of State for War and Air in 1919, the same year he resumed taking flying lessons, which resulted in a premature end to his rather inauspicious flying career.
The talk will cover the background to Churchill's appointment, in April 1939, at the age of 64, as the Honorary Air Commodore of No 615 (County of Surrey) Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force, while he was still in the 'political wilderness'. It will include much of Churchill's background, his flying experiences and other credentials, his wartime involvement with 'his' squadron, nicknamed 'Churchill's Own", as well as his application as a political leader, and concluding with some reflections on his legacy.
Julian's presentation will include both video and audio content.
