Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland: Introduction to aquatic plants

Led by Lynda Weekes of IT Tralee and longstanding botanist, this is a hands-on workshop where you will pick up skills needed to identify aquatic macrophyte species that many find challenging. These include vascular plant groups such as the pondweeds and starworts (among others). Following an introduction to aquatic plants, their adaptations and identification, there will be an opportunity to examine and identify a collection of live specimens. In the afternoon, there will be visit to the River Nore, where participants can practice their identification skills and surveying techniques.

Please note that check-in will take place from 10:00hrs along with the opportunity to make the most of some refreshments, with the workshop subsequently commencing at 10:30hrs.

Participants are requested to bring the following for the workshop if you can:

• Hand lens if participants have their own
• Plant specimens to ID if you like, but specimens will be available
• ID Key, but a handout will be given
• Pen, pencil, notepad
• Lunch (teas and coffees will be provided)
• CLEAN Waders preferable for afternoon trip to river or CLEAN wellies if not
• Sterilisation available on day
• Life jacket/buoyancy aid essential for those wanting to wade in the river
• Waterproofs in case of rain
