Rainbow Teens in a Black-and-White World: The Ethics of Working with LGBTQ Youth
Presented by TCA President, Michael DeVoll, M.Ed., LPC-S
-This workshop will provide 3 CE hours in Ethics-
Often, mental health professionals feel under-prepared for working with clients from the LGBTQ communities, especially when those clients are adolescents. This workshop will look at the ethical implications and psychosocial forces at work in the life of teens, in the context of their adolescent development, who are exploring their gender or sexuality. We will explore an ecological system theory of development to better understand adolescence and LGBTQ identity development. The workshop will include interactive activities and multimedia components.
Workshop Objectives:
- At the conclusion of this participants will:
- Understand ethical considerations when working with LGBTQ youth,
- recognize normal adolescent development as it intersects with an LGBTQ identity development,
- be able to utilize a model of psychosocial forces that impact the LGBTQ identity development of adolescents as they conceptualize treatment,
- and create a therapeutic environment to effectively address issues of LGBTQ identity development with adolescents.
