SouthWest Fest 2022 is Happening!

And sooner than you think!

The Northern Arizona Chapter of Enrolled Agents, which serves Prescott and the surrounding communities, was scheduled to host SouthWest Fest for 2022.  A few EAs from the Prescott area began planning early in the summer of 2021.  COVID and other issues created planning obstacles.  In January, 2022, the SWF planning team proposed a split SouthWest Fest for 2022:  a two-day webinar in June, and a single day in-person seminar in late October.  In mid-February, one of the two Prescott SWF coordinators died following a brief illness.  That further complicated work on SWF.  To say that planning the 2022 SouthWest Fest has been a challenge would be an understatement.

But…..we have what I believe will be an exceptional SouthWest Fest, offered in the following format:

·       June 16 & 17, 2022 – Webinar only.

o   On June 16, Jason Silver, criminal tax attorney from Scottsdale, will discuss recent IRS and other initiatives in COVID relief (PPP, Employee Retention Credit, Economic Injury Disaster Loans) fraud investigations, along with an increasing number of IRS referrals for criminal prosecution of non-payment of payroll trust fund taxes.  Jason will also discuss issues involving foreign financial assets, including FBAR, FATCA, FinCEN and more.

o   Also on June 16, Gregory Robinson, tax attorney from Phoenix, will discuss Community Property, which affects almost all married taxpayers in Arizona.  Greg will review the law, issues, concerns and opportunities associated with community property rules.

o   On June 16, Christine Freeland, CPA in Chandler, will present two hours of Ethics.  Christine has presented Ethics at IRS National Tax Forums.

o   On June 17, Bradley Burnett, tax attorney and national tax speaker, will present eight hours of CPE.  He will review current developments, including recent IRS guidance on timing of forgiveness of PPP loans.  Mr. Burnett will provide in-depth coverage of Form 7203 and Schedules K-2 and K-3, introduced by IRS in recent months and required on 2021 tax returns.  He will provide an overview of Employee Retention Credit claims, which could result in large refunds for your business clients.  Bradley will also address important tax planning considerations for the anticipated uncertain economy ahead.

The SouthWest Fest tax webinar on June 16 and 17 will provide 14 hours of continuing professional education on timely and meaningful topics, presented by knowledgeable and experienced tax professionals.

·       October 21, 2022 – In-person only seminar, in Phoenix

o   The one-day, in-person seminar will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the Desert Willow Conference  Center, 4340 E. Cotton Center Blvd, Phoenix.  We anticipate 7 hours of continuing professional education.  Lunch and breaks will be provided to attendees as part of the cost of registration.

o   Sherrill Trovato, MBA, MST, EA and USTCP, will discuss representation of taxpayers under examination, with in-depth review of audit issues and audit techniques.  Sherrill will also address representation in unagreed examinations, primarily in the form of administrative appeals within IRS, but also the possibility of petitioning Tax Court.  Sherrill’s coverage of these topics will provide 4 hours of CPE.

o   A small group of Arizona EAs who have extensive experience in matters involving the IRS Collection Division, will discuss approaches to representing clients with significant delinquent tax debt.  This session will qualify for 2 hours of CPE.

o   Sherrill and the EAs on the Collections panel will have a roundtable discussion of the issues and challenges of representing clients before the IRS, as the Service continues to struggle in a post-COVID environment.  This section will qualify for 1 hour of CPE.
