Join the St. Louis Actuaries Club on June 26th at 11:30am at the Maggiano's for lunch and a discussion of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

This session will give you an insight into how Artificial Intelligence in general, and Machine Learning in particular, differ from what we have been used to; and why they are suddenly emerging as disruptive forces across many industries. The scientist of the future must have an appreciation for these technologies or they may find themselves the scientists of the past. We can’t guarantee what the future will require in terms of skill sets; but we are confident that the skills from last week, that got us to where we are now, won’t be sufficient to get us to where we wish to be in the world of next week.

Yet, surprisingly, many of the techniques now being hailed as modern breakthroughs are actually decades old. Why are they so important now? How can we embrace and adapt them for competitive advantages? How do we get beyond the jargon, and understand the conceptual power (and simplicity) of machine learning?

In this session, we’ll discuss the recent progress of AI, the potential of ML, and spotlight some major techniques such as random forests, deep neural networks, and genetic algorithms. Our objective is to demystify them – to open the curtain and show how they work, without a lot of jargon and complications. It is not magic; but you may just feel like a magician afterwards.

Dave Snell has spent much of his life translating complex technologies into understandable terms. As the former Technology Evangelist, and VP of Asia-Pacific Technology, for RGA Reinsurance Company, he has presented on technology-based tools and techniques throughout Asia, Oceania, and North America to thousands of knowledge workers in dozens of disciplines. He is a co-inventor on patents in the United States, India, South Africa, and Japan on ways to combine human and machine intelligence for a synergistic outcome. An early AI expert system he developed back in 1999 has been used to underwrite over 100 Billion dollars of life insurance, has been translated into several languages and is still in use in over a dozen countries. He currently teaches machine learning at Maryville University and continues to edit (over nine years) the Predictive Analytics and Futurism newsletter for the Society of Actuaries.
