For everyone in our butterfly and bumblebee monitoring schemes, and for anyone else interested in joining the schemes, please join us for a weekend searching for the Essex Skipper, along with other butterflies and bumblebees, in and around Wexford. 

The Essex Skipper is a new addition to the Irish fauna and colonised areas around Wexford town in 2006.  It is also an excellent example of how butterflies can be sensitive and immediate indicators of climate change and how recording species like the Essex Skipper can provide insight into how other species will colonise Ireland in the decades to come.

There's no charge for attending the field meeting but places are limited.

  10:00   Introductory talk on butterflies and the ecology of the Essex Skipper in Ireland      
  11:30   Lunch - bring your own or eat in the Hotel      
  12:30   Guided walk around core Essex Skipper habitats at Killinick Train Station (52.26151, -6.45865) (T05271328)
  14:00   Break up into teams to search for the Essex Skipper at other sites      
  18:00   Farmers Kitchen Hotel, collation of records from the teams and discussion of the monitoring schemes (52.30771, -6.45719) (T05261843)
  19:30   Dinner in the Farmers Kitchen Hotel      
  21:30   Socialising      
Sun 29th 10:00   Meet at Lady's Island carpark (52.20832, -6.38201) (T10630748)
  10:15   Spend the morning walking around Lady's Island and, time permitted, moving onto Rostonstown dunes until 13:00
