The AI revolution is here, and by “here” I mean right here in our consulting rooms. The accelerating AI age is already transforming self-experience, intimate relationships, and even desire itself. For adolescents and young adults, identity and sexual development are being functionally organized in new ways through AI-mediated experiences. Patients of all ages now present with chatbot relationships that range from instrumentally useful to emotionally resonant and companionable to psychologically destabilizing—even destructive. Interactive self-help tools marketed as “therapy-bots” are becoming widely accepted as viable treatment options. In response, psychodynamic clinicians need to develop new ways of understanding and actively engaging a new world that is emerging daily. This presentation will explore the clinical state of play amid these rapidly accelerating developments, focusing on how psychodynamic frameworks can evolve so that we can think, feel, and act effectively in response.
