AI based computational design methods and their application to conceptual design of building structures. The talk will attempt to highlight some of the possibilities for Structural Engineering in the near future with AI and generative design enabled design tools.

This talk presents an AI-powered generative design engine for automatically creating optimised structural systems for a given architectural input, subject to design and construction constraints. This connects architecture with construction, enabling Architects to quickly evaluate feasibility of different concepts whilst Engineers and Contractors can easily assess and modify the different structural concepts proposed by the system. A key advantage of such a system is that it allows engineers and contractors to have an early voice in the design process leading to cost efficient and sustainable structures.
The research shows how AI methods can be used to address very complex design problems in the AEC space while ensuring trust, and at the same time, complying with a plethora of design requirements from multiple stakeholders. The key is to allow designers to collaborate with AI systems while progressively making changes to critical subsystems and validating them. This allows a design to evolve from concept design to final design, while surfacing critical design insights about cost and sustainability much earlier than it is possible with existing design methods.

Kosala Bandara is a Sr. Principal Research Scientist in Autodesk Research. His work involves research and development into new generative design algorithms for both manufacturing and construction industries. Originally a Structural Engineer, Kosala spent a decade advancing generative design for manufacturing. His expertise in this space spans over optimisation of thin shells (PhD at Cambridge University), lattices (Within Technologie - startup), and topology optimisation (Autodesk Research). Lately, he has returned to his roots and started applying generative design for the AEC industry, specifically in Structural Engineering.
