Dr. Rurak earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, graduating with a BA in Health & Societies and a concentration in international health. Remaining in Philadelphia, he pursued his medical education at Jefferson Medical College, followed by residency at Drexel University/Hahnemann Hospital. He then moved to New York City where he completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital.
During his fellowship, Dr. Rurak developed a deep interest in pulmonary physiology, exercise, and pulmonary hypertension. Seeking to expand his expertise, he completed a three-month elective at National Jewish Health as a fellow, immersing himself further in these specialized areas.
Following the completion of his fellowship, Dr. Rurak joined the faculty at Mount Sinai Hospital. In his first year on faculty, he returned to National Jewish Health to enhance his proficiency in pulmonary physiology and CPET interpretation. This experience proved invaluable as he assumed the role of co-director of the CPET Lab at Mount Sinai, where he played a pivotal role in rebuilding the CPET program that had been temporarily paused during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In March, Dr. Rurak transitioned to join the faculty at National Jewish Health as part of the pulmonary hypertension team. His clinical and research interests encompass pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, dyspnea, pulmonary physiology, and exercise testing.
