AIA ME Annual Conference, 2025, Fairmont Hotel, Amman, 00000, Jordan.

Jordan’s story stretches back over nine millennia, from Paleolithic settlements to the rise of the Ammon, Moab, and Edom kingdoms at the end of the Bronze Age. Successive civilizations—Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic—left their mark on its landscape, seen in the enduring cities of Jerash, Um Qais, Pella, and beyond. More recently, the Arab Revolt of 1916 paved the way for a modern Jordan, rooted in resilience and progress.

Today, Jordan stands at the intersection of history and innovation. Its cultural heritage is not only preserved but actively reinterpreted through adaptive reuse and urban rehabilitation. From Madaba and Salt to Um Qais and Um El Jemal, restoration projects highlight how historic environments can support contemporary life while enriching social and economic vitality.

As Jordan embraces demographic growth and environmental awareness, architects and planners are shaping a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Preservation efforts now extend beyond monuments, influencing academic programs, city planning, and community development. The result is a living example of how heritage can guide sustainable futures and inspire new architectural typologies that honor the past while addressing today’s needs.
