How can the relational principles of our work in craniosacral therapy be revisited from the perspective of movement?

The capacity to listen and be receptive is at the heart of both craniosacral therapy and moving. Invest in the awareness and the doing takes care of itself. This workshop will address how we meet our own body in moving and in treatment.

We will approach the body as a fluid system in which the bones can be suspended in the tissues, rather than the idea of the bones being a stacked structure. By orienting to our midline we will enhance our connection to the ground and the sky, allowing for two directional energy through the body.

Listening, slowing down, paying attention to each moment supports coherence and integrity so clarity, simplicity, and efficient movement emerge. It is harder to do less and be clear, but specificity and sustained practice allows for new pathways in the fascia, fluid continuity and improved control from the nervous system.

Day 1 Grounding

  • We will pay attention to how we ground and how we can come into relationship with our whole body. We will explore meditative awareness and active engagement of the body. Dissociation can be very hard to spot in ourselves and in others. We will revisit how and why people dissociate. Active micro-movements during a cranial session can really help people find their bodies.

Day 2 Rhythm

  • Rhythm is fundamental to the cranial paradigm. We will use pulsing to play with generating fluidity and fascial continuity in a partner’s body.
  • The fascial system can work as a support in which the architecture of the bones can be suspended rather than stacked, allowing for greater ease of movement and space in the body. We will encourage the tissues to breathe into their elasticity. Particular attention will be paid to the thoracolumbar fascia. Exciting new research on elastic recoil and fascia will be covered.

Day 3 Spirals

  • On the third day we will address seeing and leading with the eyes as an initiation into moving and following our own body organization. How the internal sequencing inevitably encourages an innate spiraling motion in the body. There is a spiral inherent to the birth process, in the adult whole body shapes often involved long, slow twists.
  • We will pay attention to the spine and supporting articulation in areas that often get ignored. In rotating the spine as one whole continuous length we can invite the smaller muscles to function as one continuous muscle. A common habit is to force the rotation; the more we push into the areas that are already mobile, the more we reinforce fixed blocks of activity, rather than allowing for continuity and communication through the whole.

What we will do

  • Partner work involving non-cranial touch to develop awareness of movement patterns followed by biodynamic cranial sessions in pairs, each day in both the morning and afternoon.
  • We will not offer any particular form or style of movement practice. The goal is to establish principles of awareness to enhance our skills in being in our own bodies. This often requires sustained practice and detailed attention. Our experience is that self knowing is essential to being able to recognise patterns in our clients.
  • Understanding how we can use our own weight and mass to move with greater ease. By yielding in movement and finding fluidity in the body, weight is not necessarily heavy.
  • Generate an understanding of embodiment through the practice of moving with a partner. Finding several ways of listening and being present with another in moving. Using less tension in our moving is different from a relaxation, it is about disengaging the muscles and allowing plasticity.
  • Follow the lines of the fascia through brushing exercises to gain a sense of the whole body tissue matrix in which the bones are suspended.
  • These exercises will give time for the body to soften, open and change in tone as it connects with its own fluidity. The muscles are encouraged to work with greater plasticity and less jumping into tension states.

It’s unlikely to happen, but we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule an event due to low enrollment, presenter illness, or other circumstances. If the event is cancelled, participants will receive a full refund of their registration fee. If the event is rescheduled, participants will have the option of attending the rescheduled event or receiving a full refund. If we cancel or reschedule a workshop or other event, we won’t refund your travel, lodging, or meal expenses. Marina Collard has been dancing and/or teaching movement, dance and somatic practice all her life. She is also a biodynamic craniosacral therapist. Steve Haines teaches cranial work all over the world and is the co author of ‘Cranial Intelligence – A Practical Guide To Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy’ and 'Pain Is Really Strange'.
