Glenn Greenwald is coming to speak in Ottawa
Glenn Greenwald along with his colleagues at The Guardian was awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for his work on the Edward Snowden NSA documents. Glenn is also a NYT best selling author and frequent commenter on CBC, MSNBC, Morning Joe, and Democracy Now. Glenn Greenwald is now recognized as one of the most influential journalists in America.
Glenn will be speaking about state surveillance, privacy and its impact on Canadians. CSEC, Canadian Security Establishment Canada, is Canada's version of the NSA. CSEC is a full partner in Five Eyes. CSEC is putting the final touches on their new facility in Ottawa, at $1.5 billion dollars, it is the most expensive building ever built in Canada. What are they doing there? Come join us and find out.
The "Five Eyes", often abbreviated as "FVEY", refer to an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. These countries are bound by the multilateral UKUSA Agreement - a treaty for joint cooperation in signals intelligence. - Wikipedia
In addition to his fearless reporting on Snowden, Greenwald is known for his relentless and uncompromising writing on Chelsea Manning, civil rights, privacy, a complicit media, Wikileaks, torture, and American exceptionalism.
His latest book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State - tells the story of his meeting with Edward Snowen and the ensuing turmoil that roiled the US security state right up to the Oval Office. Amazon recently deemed No Place to Hide - our pick for the best book of 2014 (so far) in Nonfiction.
If you are interested in politics, the NSA, the media, or the security state, no one is writing more cogently, scathingly, or with such passion and precision, as Glenn Greenwald.
The White House (and the NSA) are now listening to Glenn. Why not you?
Our moderator for the evening will be Jesse Brown. Jesse is an independent journalist who has covered privacy, surveillance and digital rights for the CBC, Maclean's, Toronto Life and The Toronto Star. He is the host of the CANADALAND podcast. Jesse "gets it" on the surveillance state and privacy.
After Glenn's talk, Glenn and Jesse will sit down for a wide ranging discussion on the Snowden docs, surveillance, privacy, and what this means for Canadians.
Following the event, you are invited to join Glenn and Jesse for a private reception. Tickets are limited, so order now. $45 including HST. The price includes one drink and a buffet.
