‘You Can’t Come to my Birthday Party!’

How to intervene in verbally as well as physically aggressive moments with young children, whilst also preventing bullying behaviours from developing.

When children physically hurt each other, adults usually respond swiftly to stop the behaviour.  When children make verbally hurtful comments such as ‘you can’t come to my birthday party’ or ‘you’re not my friend anymore’, adults do not necessarily know how to respond in a way that supports the expression of feelings in non-hurtful ways.

In this workshop we will discuss concerns about bullying in the early years and view video clips of typical physical and verbal aggression seen in pre-school children.  We will look at six strategies adults can use to intervene at these moments and support children to learn positive communication skills.
