About the Summit:

High infant mortality and associated racial inequities are one of Ohio's biggest public health challenges. Ohio’s infant mortality rate is higher than most states and the nation as a whole. This free conference will highlight the problem, point to solutions, and change your mind about the health of your family, friends and community.

1,000 babies die every year. What can you do about it? Find out on Dec. 5-6!

–––
The Goal: To have 1,500 Ohioans be...

  • Be Committed to achieving the Healthy People 2020 objective of 6.0 infant deaths per 1,00 live births in every racial and ethnic group.
  • Better informed about our infant death and disparities challenge
  • Inspired, energized  and equipped with ideas and action steps to work for change in their communities

–––
Why Participate?

  • Ohio’s African American infant death rate is more than double our white rate.
  • Ohio is vigorously pursing numerous initiatives to fight the leading causes of infant motality.
  • Saving the lives of Ohio babies will take all of us working together at the state and community levels.

–––
The Numbers

  • 2014 overall Infant Mortality rate*:  6.8  white rate:  5.3  African-American rate:  14.3 Hispanic rate: 6.2
  • Healthy People 2020 (national) objective: 6.0 overall rate.
*The infant mortality rate is the number of live-born infants per thousand who die before their 1st birthday.

The Ohio Collaborative to Prevent Infant Mortality was formed in 2010 as the successor to the Ohio Infant Mortality Task Force. The Task Force issued a report in late 2009 which provided a detailed update on infant mortality, outlined current prevention efforts, and provided ten recommendations together with rationale and strategies to address Ohio’s lack of progress in reducing infant mortality and birth-outcome disparities. These recommendations provide the starting point for the collaborative. For more information on The Ohio Collaborative please visit: https://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhprograms/cfhs/octpim/infantmortality.aspx
